TMS Therapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is an innovative, alternative treatment for depression. Using MRI technology, TMS restores limited neuronal activity in select areas of the brain. TMS treats depression in the exact location where it occurs, as opposed to moving throughout the body like medications.

It is FDA-approved, non-invasive, and virtually free of side effects. Some patients may feel a mild headache or scalp sensitivity in the treatment location of TMS, but this generally goes away within a few days.

Since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, rates of depression and anxiety have tripled.

These are challenging times, but TMS can help.

For decades, researchers have sought safe and effective treatments for depression. However, there is no single depression treatment which has been proven to work for everyone. Depression is often treated with antidepressant medications; however, alternative treatments for depression are available. These depression therapies have been shown to work in people who do not receive benefit from medications or cannot tolerate the side effects caused by them. One alternative therapy for the treatment of depression is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, with over 30 years of application in neuroscientific and clinical research around the world.

Magstim TMS Therapy uses short pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. These magnetic pulses are delivered to the area in the brain that researchers believe is responsible for emotional judgement and mood regulation. The rapid magnetic pulses created by the TMS system, pass through the skull and generate an electric current in the brain directly under the treatment coil. These electric currents cause neurons to fire and stimulate surrounding brain cells.

TMS TREATMENT PATH

DIAGNOSTIC
ASSESSMENT

Determine if criteria is met for TMS treatment. This consists of a 30-45 minute evaluation by Dr. Mohrer.

PRIOR
AUTHORIZATION

If criteria for TMS treatment is met, it is very likely your insurance company will require a prior authorization. It can take 3-10 days to reach a decision.

MAPPING, MOTOR THRESHOLD & FIRST TREATMENT

Your first appointment consists of determining location and dose, followed by a full TMS 19-minute treatment.

DAILY TMS
TREATMENT

You will receive 19- minute treatments Monday through Friday. The number of treatment sessions is determined by your diagnosis and insurance.

REFRESHER
TREATMENTS
A new authorization for TMS treatment can be requested from your insurance company for those clients requiring additional treatment sessions.
MEDICATION MANAGEMENT & ONGOING CARE

Once TMS treatment is complete, clients will return back to their prescribing provider for ongoing medication management.

TMS is one of the largest steps forward in innovative psychiatric care in decades
